What to Know Before Your First Brazilian Wax
Over the past decade, Brazilian waxes have become extremely popular among women, specifically those under the age of 50. If you're not familiar with this type of waxing service, you've come to the right place. We spoke to Jessie Frampton and Florence Gaven-Rossavik, the owners behind Fuzz Wax Bar – the country's uber popular and rapidly growing wax salon – about all things related to Brazilians. According to Jess and Flo, Brazilian waxes are the #1 most requested service among females walking into Fuzz. They call this option "Fuzz Free" at each of their seven locations, which means everything goes (front, back and top) unless you ask otherwise.
Here's a list of 8 things every woman should know before gathering the courage to get their very first Brazilian wax:
Why waxing is better than shaving
When you wax, your hair starts growing slower and finer and skin will stay smooth for much longer. Shaving increases the chances of dark and coarse hair regrowth and can also cause skin irritation and discomfort, such as razor burns and ingrown hairs. You will never get this with waxing.
Are Brazilians safe for everyone?
Yes! Waxing is a very safe method of hair removal. However, if you have any doubts or a specific skin condition, consult your doctor before going for your first wax.
The ideal length
The ideal length for hair is about ¼ inch or 6mm – and at Fuzz Wax Bar, their Fuzzologists will trim your hair before your wax if it is longer.
If you're a shaver, you should wait at least 3 weeks after using your razor or else the hair will be too short. According to Jess and Flo, many shavers come in and their hair isn't long enough. They don't like sending anyone home (especially after they have built up enough courage to go in!), but they can't wax unless the hair is at this ideal length.
What to do before your first Brazilian appointment
First things first, relax! In order to make the process more enjoyable, here are a few things you can do:
- Take a warm shower before your wax to open up your pores
- Use a loofah to exfoliate your skin and prevent ingrown hairs
- Avoid gels, lotions and oils before your wax as it may interfere with hair removal
- Avoid tanning 24 hours before your wax
- Scan your skin before to ensure it is free from cuts, scrapes, moles, and skin tags
Minimizing the pain
No wax will be entirely pain-free, however, Fuzz Wax Bar applies a quick waxing method to ensure less pain and a faster experience. They also use hard wax for more sensitive areas as it only adheres to the hair and not the skin, making it a lot less painful! Some visitors also prefer to take an aspirin or apply a numbing cream 30 minutes before their wax.
And remember — the more often you wax the less pain you will experience with each visit.
What to do in-between appointments
Fuzz recommends using after-wax lotions and exfoliators to help keep the skin smooth, soft and free from bumps and ingrown hairs. They carry a great line of all-natural pre-and post-wax skincare products that help to exfoliate and sooth freshly waxed skin.
What not to do in-between appointments
Jess and Flo recommend steering clear of prolonged exposure to heat 1-2 days after a Brazilian wax (direct sun, saunas, steam rooms, etc.) – it is important, as your skin will be more prone to burning.
How often should you go?
Generally speaking, Fuzz recommends waiting four weeks in between appointments for an even hair growth cycle.
By following the above suggestions and a little (OK, a lot) of courage, you'll be hair-free down there in no time.
